The Award Winning Two-Story Cereal Box Airbnb™

Legendary beginnings

Airbnb didn’t start with venture capital — it started with the founders selling cereal door-to-door to keep the company alive. That creativity has become legend and is now the inspiration behind this unique listing.

Airbnb launched a worldwide design competition in search of imaginative out-of-the-box ideas for the platform. Trey Dillon captured the judges attention by cleverly submitting a literal box… and won!

The Cereal BNB is a two-story cereal box airbnb featuring tasty one-of-a-kind designs.

"The BNB industry has been long distracted by the Bed portion of the product and has vastly underestimated the Breakfast element of the experience."

Big dreams, small boxes

Airbnb’s cereal story goes back to 2008, when the founders — Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk — were deep in credit-card debt trying to keep their tiny “AirBed & Breakfast” idea alive. With almost no users and no investors, they needed a creative way to survive.

During the U.S. election season, they designed limited-edition cereal boxes: Obama O’s and Cap’n McCain’s. They hand-filled each box with cheap cereal, sold them as collectibles for $40, and ended up making around $30,000 — just enough to pay off their debts and keep building the company.

More importantly, that scrappy stunt caught the attention of Y Combinator. When the founders told the cereal story during their interview, YC realized that anyone who could sell $40 cereal could probably convince people to stay in a stranger’s home. The company was accepted — and that quirky cereal gamble became the spark that kept Airbnb alive.

A delicious idea comes to life

In search of imaginative, “can-this-really-exist?” ideas, Airbnb hosted a worldwide design competition called the OMG! Fund and set a bounty of $10 million. The judging panel included design and style icon Iris Apfel, architectural expert Koichi Takada, Airbnb Superhost Kristie Wolfe, and Airbnb VP of Experiential Bruce Vaughn. One hundred creatives from around the world would each be awarded $100,000 and invited to bring their ideas to life.

Trey Dillon chose to submit a concept for a cereal-themed Airbnb. Aside from believing the world’s most iconic breakfast deserved its own immersive stay, Airbnb’s origin story of selling cereal door-to-door gave him an unwavering confidence in his submission.

“It’s poetic genius to respond to an out-of-the-box prompt with a literal box.” This was an idea Dillon was willing to stake his fate on.

Out of the tens of thousands of submissions, it’s unknown how many ever became a reality — but if someone is counting, they can now add the Cereal BNB™ to the list.

Designer, creative
and cereal entrepreneur

Trey Dillon is a Serial Entrepreneur who has recently earned the coveted title of Cereal Entrepreneur. As a Creative, Trey Dillon lives at the intersection of product design and brand development - keeping what he refers to as “a greenhouse of ideas”, constantly weighing what next idea deserves his focus and attention. This greenhouse is exactly where the vision behind the Cereal BNB™ was seeded before deciding to commit his efforts on this rather unreasonable concept.

It may come as a surprise, but Dillon is not obsessed with cereal. He is obsessed with whatever he deems to be “a great idea”. We’re all just fortunate he chose cereal this time around!
